A Break From Cakes!!

I have a few weeks until I have to make my oldest daughter's cake. I did not want you to be disappointed that you did not hear from me for a while. So I am going to show off some of my previous cakes that I made. I do hope you enjoy the pictures. I may decide to make a pineapple upside down cake. I have been craving one!!

Perry the Platypus

Hello again,
I have crated another masterpiece. Ha Ha. I am so vain. I made a Perry the Platypus cake for a friend today. Insite of my youngest daughter up and down all night, and miserable with a high fever: I finnished this cake in record time. I fell apart when I took it out of the pan, but I fixed it by freezing it upside down. It is the same as always, white cake with buttercream frosing. I used Wilton colors and they just pop! My goodness they know their stuff. I printed a picture and just cut it to make a template. The eyes look a bit funny, and I couldn't get some of the side frosted. Next time I wont cut the part between his arm and leg out. I couldn't get his color right so I used royal blue. I am satified with how the cake turned out. Thanks for listening and I do hope you enjoy!

What not to do

I awoke at 6:30 this morning because I had to let my cakes freeze. Very much my fault for baking 3 cakes at a time. Well for some reason my fondant did not work as smoothly as usual. It kept overlaping. There were cracks in the fondant due to me having to cut it so there were not ripples in my fondant. However since I was making a tower I just hid the cracks behind vines. Also, I bought a stencil to create a brick pattern in the fondant and silly me did not press it in before I put the fondant on the cake. Although, I did it after I placed the fondant on the cake and it made subtle lines.
Since my daughter wanted a chocolate cake, the cake itself was way too moist, and the tower part sank into the cake a bit. It was like the leaning tower of Rapunzel!! Haha! It was a hit as always and I loved eating it!
I realize I am just learning what not to do! Trial and Error a lady I spoke to called it. There are plenty of errors! And lots of trials. Another cake down for June one more to go!! I will be attempting a Perry the Plattypus, from the show Phinnius and Ferb, on Friday. I am still trying to figure that one out!

Here are pics from this week's cake.

Rapunzel cake

It is my youngest daughter's birthday today and I am on a cake mission! She asked for an oreo cake so hooray for chocolate!!! At this very moment I am baking 3 cakes in my oven, probably not the smartest. She has also asked for me to make it like the Tagled tower. I am using fondant, which is my favorite to work with due to its so much smoother. I am going to Michael's later to see if I can find a stencil or something to make a brick pattern in my fondant. I will probably use buttercream frosting, its my favorite and its easiest. She asked for the prince and a horse and I had to burst her bubble real quick. I maybe need to take a sculpting class too! ha ha! I bought a doll to put on cake. and I am not sure how I am going to get the cone shape at the top of the turret. I am excited to make it. We will see how it turns out tomorrow. I am also going to try and see if my icing turns out differently when I use butter instead of margerine. Or if it could be the type of food coloring. We will see. Until tomorrow!

Finis!!

Wow this was a duzi!! I don't get why my icing likes to seperate from my cake!! And why my food coloring likes to seperate from my icing!!! I hypothisize that it is because I used margrine instead of butter...or because it was raining when I made it. What is your take? I did finish the cake and it looks pretty cool. However sloppy in places due to the fact my icing was hot and too runny, and when removing the wax paper(I put it under cake to prevent the cake board from getting icing on it) it pulled some the the icing off. And does anyone know how to make black frosting? I just mix all the colors and it becomes this funky looking goo color. It works though, I guess. My favorite part of the cake is the gumpaste parts I made. Although, the tuning knobs keep falling out. A lesson that I learned is make the sticks longer. And use butter instead of margrine. I think I have mastered the star tip! Its the easiest. I tried the shell and I just cant get it. Practice Practice Practice!! Well Ta Ta for now.

Cake #1 for June

I baked the cakes today for the cake I am making this weekend. Oh my, I can't wait to eat them. They are currently in the freezer. I was planning on decorating the cake tonight, but they are not frozen enough to cut smoothly. I am way behind! I have been a bit under the weather. The cake I am making is a guitar. My inspiration is the toy guitar called Paper Jamz. Its white cake with buttercream frosting(seems to be the one I like to use). I am attempting to make it look as much like a guitar as possible. Also use gumpaste dusted with silver luster dust to make all the small parts: like the strings and tuner knobs. No set backs so far, and pray for me to be able to mix the colors!
Thanks for listening

Embarking on a new Journey

Hello All,
It was suggested that I begin to blog about cakes. So, here I am. Since June will be a busy month for me when it comes to cakes I will start now. I have about 3 to make this month and am very excited. Understand that I am just an amiture and do not charge for my cakes. I am just going to be sharing my thoughts on my sucesses and failures on cakes that I make. I am up for suggestions and will be challenging myself to create masterpieces. I am planning to one day take the decorating classes.
Here is a sample of one that I made Memorial Day weekend for a friend's daughter. It had some major set backs and I definately had to improvise, but the little girl loved it and thats all that matters.
I truely hope you enjoy my thoughts and my creations.
