Blue Tower

I am finally blogging again! Man its been a long time! I have made some cakes but just haven't documented them. My lastest installment is a cake and some cupcakes I made for the Langley AFB Chapel. It was, as usual, a disaster. However, I pushed through. The cakes took an hour a piece to bake. Why did I expect anything else? I blew out a hand mixer! Ran out of shortening, totally my fault! The finished product was not flawless, but it looked awesome! The cake is 4 teirs. Flavors from top to bottom: white, lemon, butter, and chocolate pound cake. Each teir was layered with strawberry filling with fresh strawberries! Topped with, you guessed it, buttercream. Its the one I have mastered and everyone seems to enjoy. I just couldn't seem to get the teirs lined up correctly, or the frosting smooth. Also, I had a hard time with beading the frosting along the edges. It tasted great and got amazing remarks from all the ladies. I truely hope you enjoy what you see!

Monster Cups and Harley Cakes

This weekend has been a crazy one! And I haven't bloged about cakes I have made! What is wrong with me? I am a slacker! This past weekend I made these Taste of Home inspiered monster cupcakes. I used a german chocolate cake and (at first) buttercream icing. Then stick the oriental noodle toppings in the cupcake to make apendiges. Heat the icing so as to coat the sticks. I learned after lots of cussing, That i needed to use can frosting. After I used the can frosting it worked great. They still didn't turn out like the picture, but was cute.

I also made a Harley Davidson logo cake. It turned out wonderful! It was a butter pound cake with, as usual, buttercream frosting. It melted in my mouth! I love butter pound cake. it may just be my new favorite flavor.

2 cakes

Well, What a tough week its been! I have had the flu. However, right before I got the flu I made a pineapple upside down cake. It tasted delicious. It looked, well lets say, ROUGH! I'm not sure what I done but it stuck to the pan and the brownsugar and butter didn't come off the pan like I thought it would. So, here it is.

Then after I felt better, I made my oldest daughter's Bratz birthday cake. Its mediocre but, it tasted so good and it wasn't aweful looking. I tried to make pedistals for the dolls however as always I learned what not to do. I should have made the other cake in a cup cake pan. Which was my inital intention. When I got around to baking the cakes it left my brain. The cake was a chocolate pound cake with white chocolate morsels, and cream cheese frosting. I printed the symbol off the computer. One day it will be edible!! Enjoy!

Perry the Platypus

Hello again,
I have crated another masterpiece. Ha Ha. I am so vain. I made a Perry the Platypus cake for a friend today. Insite of my youngest daughter up and down all night, and miserable with a high fever: I finnished this cake in record time. I fell apart when I took it out of the pan, but I fixed it by freezing it upside down. It is the same as always, white cake with buttercream frosing. I used Wilton colors and they just pop! My goodness they know their stuff. I printed a picture and just cut it to make a template. The eyes look a bit funny, and I couldn't get some of the side frosted. Next time I wont cut the part between his arm and leg out. I couldn't get his color right so I used royal blue. I am satified with how the cake turned out. Thanks for listening and I do hope you enjoy!

What not to do

I awoke at 6:30 this morning because I had to let my cakes freeze. Very much my fault for baking 3 cakes at a time. Well for some reason my fondant did not work as smoothly as usual. It kept overlaping. There were cracks in the fondant due to me having to cut it so there were not ripples in my fondant. However since I was making a tower I just hid the cracks behind vines. Also, I bought a stencil to create a brick pattern in the fondant and silly me did not press it in before I put the fondant on the cake. Although, I did it after I placed the fondant on the cake and it made subtle lines.
Since my daughter wanted a chocolate cake, the cake itself was way too moist, and the tower part sank into the cake a bit. It was like the leaning tower of Rapunzel!! Haha! It was a hit as always and I loved eating it!
I realize I am just learning what not to do! Trial and Error a lady I spoke to called it. There are plenty of errors! And lots of trials. Another cake down for June one more to go!! I will be attempting a Perry the Plattypus, from the show Phinnius and Ferb, on Friday. I am still trying to figure that one out!

Here are pics from this week's cake.

Rapunzel cake

It is my youngest daughter's birthday today and I am on a cake mission! She asked for an oreo cake so hooray for chocolate!!! At this very moment I am baking 3 cakes in my oven, probably not the smartest. She has also asked for me to make it like the Tagled tower. I am using fondant, which is my favorite to work with due to its so much smoother. I am going to Michael's later to see if I can find a stencil or something to make a brick pattern in my fondant. I will probably use buttercream frosting, its my favorite and its easiest. She asked for the prince and a horse and I had to burst her bubble real quick. I maybe need to take a sculpting class too! ha ha! I bought a doll to put on cake. and I am not sure how I am going to get the cone shape at the top of the turret. I am excited to make it. We will see how it turns out tomorrow. I am also going to try and see if my icing turns out differently when I use butter instead of margerine. Or if it could be the type of food coloring. We will see. Until tomorrow!
